James Evertsen BFA: Essay

James Evertsen
Art Education Emphasis

As an artist, I began my college career with the desire to improve my talents and find my artistic calling in life.  I have found that I may not have one specific form of artistry that calls to me, but I have discovered when I am put in a situation of sharing my art techniques and skills by helping others that I am happiest.  Encouraging others to pursue their own artistic goals may just be that artistic calling that I have been searching for.  During my schooling I’ve been encouraged and inspired while creating my own pieces of art, and I look forward to continuing to find various forms of inspiration as I prepare to inspire others.
I have found inspiration and influence that I can pull into my art pieces from everything that I surround myself with.  My family life is a huge encouragement and influence for many of my art pieces.  I have everything I need when I’m with them.  My sons open my eye’s to life through their many first experiences and interactions with one another as well as with their parents. I have found inspiration from that first moment of my wife becoming a mother and holding our newborn, to our sons showing compassion and love for one another. I attempted to recreate their innocence and sincerity with my sculpture “Brotherly Love”. It may not be my most perfect work as it was one of my first attempts at a sculpture using the specific medium of wire, but I loved where the inspiration to create it came from.
I have also found inspiration in the simplicity of using one color in a variety of shades such as my still life of the beach ball, as well as combining multiple colors to create a more vibrant piece. I found I was able to capture the joy of life found only through a child’s eye when using multiple colors in my acrylic painting “First Experience”.  I also used color as an inspiration for my alphabet. I was to create a font using the words musical and messy.  I remember wanting a way to represent a sound wave and was inspired to use a rainbow of color in order to do this.
Many artists find they are influenced by other talented and creative artists, but I have found I have the most appreciation for and have been most inspired by my instructors. Many of them have encouraged me to try new things or focus my talents on expanding and perfecting a specific skill such as with my Print making pieces.  After being assigned to create a hybrid piece, in which I came up with the “EleKat”, I was inspired by my instructor to continue etching animals that are on the verge of extinction.  I then created “Broken Circle”, with the intent of leaving it disconnected to represent the broken circle of life as these creatures become extinct.  Little did I know that the first printmaking piece I made, called “Cycle”, would also be an inspiration in making this piece as it relates to life and death.
I have had varying forms of influences for my art pieces throughout the years.  The majority of these have come from my family and instructors, but I have also found a lot of inspiration by experimenting with color.  I will continue to open myself up to influences and inspirations all throughout my life.  I am excited to hopefully one day become an influence to others by becoming an art educator.  My hopes of this program are to gain the confidence and skills I need to pursue a career in the field I love.

1 James Evertsen BFA: Self portrait vector. T-shirt design. Alphabet. Adobe Illustrator.

I wanted to create a personal image that would show my skills with vector design
and my knowledge of Adobe Illustrator that I could place with my resume
when I submitted my work with job applications.

I had the opportunity to design multiple shirts for this hospital unit.
These are EKG rhythms that are conducted by the beating heart.
This unit specializes in the monitor and care of medical patients with heart and relative medical conditions.
I played with redesigning the universal medical symbol.
I experimented with using textures, to give an illusion of an aged look.

In a recent Typography assignment I created my first vector font from my own handwriting. I started playing around with lines and patterns in Adobe Illustrator. I made a strong pattern and converted it so I could paint it out in a stroke.

2 James Evertsen BFA: Cycle. EleKat. Broken Circle. Etching.

This project was a new challenge for me. I really enjoyed the whole process, from carving linoleum, to mixing the ink, and then to finding the accurate amount of ink on my stamp to produce an ideal print. I am attracted to Celtic knots and their symbolism. For this design I wanted to show the connection of life and death in a complete cycle.

For this etching assignment I was asked to create a hybrid design. I asked my kids what animals that they liked best, which lead me to a meerkat, elephant combination. Seeing them morphed together made me think of a toxic or chemical reaction that might lead to this strange hybrid, which gave me the idea to place these creatures in a apocalyptic environment. When I was done with my image, I started to experiment with the ink application. I spent a lot of time wiping and detailing thick and thin layers of ink so once I was ready to print, each object had some great range of values. Then I experimented with colors that helped to give a result I was hoping for.

With this etching project, I wanted to go a bit bigger in size of a copper plate and illustration.
I did some research and found that there are many more animals that are on the verge of extinction than I thought.
I found a collection of images of mothers with their young in these declining species.
I then arranged each in a circle that I could leave unconnected and unfinished.

3 James Evertsen BFA: Mountain Lion. Brotherly Love. Wire. Tissue paper

I really enjoy making things out of other materials This was my first time working with wire and my first time attempting to sculpt a recognizable subject.
I do like how I produced gestured form throughout,
yet I feel it looks to animated for the mountain lion that
I was modeling from and aiming to reproduce.

For another recent project that I created in Sculpture class,
I used an image of my boys expressing compassion.
I wanted to use the least amount of material as possible to help illustrate this scene.
For their innocence I painted it all white.
I left it hollow to give a sense of their youth and growth.
I wanted their hearts to be bold and prominent so I gave it color.

4 James Evertsen BFA: My Boys. Graphite Drawing. New born. Pastel.

I try to always keep my skills in practice by working on some type of art.
My son's are great models, that help me with a variety of action and character studies.

Life changing events are always a great reason to create an art piece.
Pastels and Charcoals are one of my favorite mediums to work with.

5 James Evertsen BFA: Over the Shoulder. Acrylic. First Experience. Multi-Color Acrylics

For his black and white Acrylic piece, I wanted to focus more on brush strokes
instead of the fine facial details.

My experimentation with color was my main focus in this piece,
for a Color Theory class assignment.
